Pet Allergic Reaction

Treat Your Pet Allergic Reaction Right Away

A pet allergic reaction can be scary for you and your pet. Learn common symptoms of allergies in pets and how our vet at Park Hills Animal Hospital can help.

Symptoms of Pet Allergies

If your pet has allergies, he or she may be scratching or biting their fur due to excessive itching. Your pet's skin may be red and raw, they may have hot spots, or they may be missing fur.

Some pets experience wheezing and coughing, while others snore due to inflammation of the throat.

Your pet may also experience runny, watery eyes, frequent ear infections, vomiting, or diarrhea.

These symptoms suggest that your pet has an allergy, but they may also give you clues what's causing the problems. For instance, vomiting and diarrhea are common symptoms that show up with a food allergy while skin itching may suggest an environmental or chemical allergy.

How Our Park Hills KY Vet Treats Allergies in Pets

If your pet has a food allergy, we will help you introduce an elimination diet to cleanse their system of inflammation. We'll then walk you through how to reintroduce potential allergens to determine what's causing your pet's allergies.

For environmental allergens, we may try a skin test or blood test. This can help us figure out what's causing the allergies, so we can develop a plan to eliminate symptoms. By changing your pet's routine, you can avoid triggering an allergic reaction. For instance, dust allergies in pets are commonly controlled by washing your pet's bedding, vacuuming your house several times a week, or using an air filter.

It may take a few visits to our veterinary clinic to get your pet's allergies fully under control. However, our team is here to help you figure out the problem and determine an effective solution so your pet is able to enjoy a high quality of life.

Read What Our Clients Say

  • "My wife and I are senior citizens and have extensive experience with vets, as we've owned many pets. Dr. Collett and his staff are nothing short of incredible! Our 15 year-old cat fell ill and, even though heavily booked, the doctor worked her into his schedule the same morning we phoned. The level of professionalism and genuine concern displayed during every phase of our appointment was absolutely mind-boggling. Our "daughter" received a thorough examination and diagnostic evaluation, proper treatment, and understandable explanations were provided. We never felt rushed and always felt that we were in great hands. Scooter has recovered and is thriving again."
